These three puffins may not be of the same "brood", but since these birds are often called "clowns of the sea", I wanted to name this image as a play off of The Three Stooges! An Atlantic Puffin, Fratercula arctica, has a robust appearance, but they are very small in size, weighing only about 1 to 1.5 lbs! The genus name, Fratercula, is derived from the Latin for “little brother.” The name refers to the sea bird’s black and white plumage, which was said to resemble robes that monks once wore. © Christie Wrazen 2018, Machias Seal Island ME, Hand-held.
