I was up early exploring different stops along the coast of Oahu, when I was hiding out near Kawainui Marsh watching to see what birds would appear. This little heron was also hiding nearby and suddenly popped up above the grass. I watched as it began browsing for a morning catch. Juvenile night herons are tricky to tell apart. This one here is a juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron and it's identified by the slightly more yellow coloration in the beak, and with a touch of green. A juvenile Yellow-Crowned Night Heron's beak is mostly black. I liked the name Keao, it is a Hawaiian name that means "the light of the day", I chose it because these herons are most active at night and it was active in the morning light of the day. 'Auku'u is the Hawaiian name for the Black-Crowned Night Heron © Christie Wrazen 2019, Oahu HI, Hand-held.
