I'm a heron fanatic. I get really excited when I see these little guys (and gals)! They are very elusive in New England and tough to spot. I remember one of the first times I spotted one (actually it was 2) in NH, I was out one morning in an area with a small pond. After a few people had passed by, I was slowly walking and saw something moving in the lily pads. They didn't see me at first and I wouldn't have seen them if they hadn't moved. They were wading around looking for a bite to eat. I watched one catch a frog and fly away. Ever since then, I've been lucky to spot them more often. There are 14 species of heron recognized in New Hampshire. The Green Heron is one of 64 known species of heron in the world and have a wide range throughout North America, all of Central America even down to northern South America. They are really interesting birds and you may have heard of a little trick they use sometimes to catch fish. They are one of the few species of wildlife known to use tools...such as sticks, feathers and insects.
