  • One of the most intriguing characteristics of wild animals is their ability to camouflage. This image shows how well this American Bittern hides in the tall blades of grass. Bitterns are not easy to find and they are mostly active at night. I was driving in Stowe, VT one afternoon and happened to catch a glimpse of a small brown heron-sized bird flying into a grassy marsh. I pulled over and scouted out the area in which I saw it land. I wasn't able to spot it at first, so I took a few pictures of the scene. I was then able to spot it, standing still and blending in with the scenery. I was very excited to actually see this bird, more surprisingly during the day, when I least expected it. © Christie Wrazen 2014, Stowe, VT, Hand-held.
