  • The Ossipee Pine Barrens forest is a rare and disappearing ecosystem found on the eastern side of New Hampshire. Less than 2,000 acres remain of what was once a 7,000 acre ecosystem. The Barrens preserve is home to many rare animals and insects, including lepidoptera (moth and butterfly) species and several declining shrubland birds, such as the common nighthawk and whip-poor-will. This is a place I have been wanting to visit and made the trip in October 2015. The day was bright and sunny and the color of the leaves were vibrant. On the top of our trail, we could see stunning views of Ossipee Lake. © Christie Wrazen 2015, Freedom NH, Hand-held.
